Malosi Samoa

A salute to the strength and spirit of Samoa

Malosi is a Samoan word for strength, energy and power in all parts of life: spiritual, cultural, economic, land and environment.

My wife, Fiona, and I made four trips to Samoa between March 2024 and March 2025 to support family.

We fell in love with the Samoan people, their way of life and their beautiful, yet in many ways challenging, place in the Pacific sun.

Most of the photographs were captured in the last two weeks of our final visit to Samoa.  Many were taken with a cellphone, often at dawn or dusk before family routines took precedence. Where possible, I asked permission to photograph the people or their houses – of several hundreds of people approached, only a handful declined.  They seemed pleased to be photographed. Their joy, pride and openness to strangers was inspiring and humbling.

A Special Gift … for someone special!
