InterCity 63 to Skanderborg.
Two series of cellphone images emerged from my train journey across Denmark from Copenhagen to Skanderborg on 28 December 2025. I was flooding with mixed emotions: My old and very flat birthplace is so different from young and jagged New Zealand that is now my home; a cold winter night and stars was periodically lit by fireworks for those that couldn’t wait for New Year’s eve; wondering what may have been, and what lay ahead.
The first series, ‘InterCity Abstractions’ was constructed by chimping to adjust for changing light as dusk passed to night and the changing speed of the train. It reflects an emotional roller-coaster as we hurtled towards my brother in Skanderborg who was recently paralysed by a stroke.
The second series, ‘InterCity 63 from København’, looked back: the kind DSB guards allowed me into the rear conductors’ compartment to photograph through the train’s rear window. Train levers flared as an array of red and green reflections in the window.
